Three Canadian tourists died and two other tourists and their Kenyan driver were slightly injured when their van collided with a lorry in central Kenya, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

Two of the three victims — two women and a man — died on the spot while the third one died later in a hospital, said Philip Ndwiga, the Central Province police chief. The injured tourists were taken to a Nairobi hospital for treatment, but the two women and a man are all out of danger, Ndwiga said on phone from Nyeri, about 87 miles north of the capital, Nairobi.

He declined to name the victims until the next of kin are informed.

The accident occurred near Nyeri town when the driver of a lorry lost control and rammed the van the tourists were travelling in, causing it to overturn, said Ndwiga. The van’s driver sustained minor bruises on his face, Ndwiga said. The tourists were on their way to the famous Samburu National Park, from Nairobi.
