Diphtheria
What is it?– What causes Diphtheria?
Diphtheria is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which sometimes produces a toxin with particularly damaging effects on the body. The disease is almost eradicated in developed countries, but in parts of the world it is endemic and can be transmitted through the air by fine droplets – making prolonged contact with the local population particularly risky.
What does it do? (Diphtheria symptoms)
After an incubation period of five days, symptoms of Diphtheria are a severe infection in the throat, pharynx or tonsils. If the bacteria produce toxin, the disease can cause cardiac and nerve damage.
Where is it?
It mainly occurs in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.
Can it be treated?
Antibiotics are used for Diphtheria treatment and will eradicate the bacteria and an anti-toxin can block its damaging effects.
Can it be prevented?
Everyone should have had at least 5 immunizations against diphtheria in childhood, but a booster is sensible for those who are traveling to a high-risk area and expect to be in prolonged contact with locals.
Danger rating: 3/10
